Long before the trumpet vine blazes and the cardinal flower rises, Aquilegia canadensis appears on rocky woodland slopes and garden borders in April and May — a nodding lantern of red and yellow, its hollow spurs brimming with nectar. The timing is precise: the columbine blooms exactly as the first ruby-throated hummingbirds return from their wintering grounds.

Wild Columbine is the most scientifically characterized of the four Nectary flowers. Researchers published a complete metabolomic profile of Aquilegia canadensis nectar in PLOS ONE — measuring the full chemical fingerprint including amino acids, organic acids, fatty acids, and sugar-alcohols.
