The Flower

In the eastern deciduous forest, spring begins with the columbine. Long before the trumpet vine blazes and the cardinal flower rises, Aquilegia canadensis appears on rocky woodland slopes and garden borders in April and May — a nodding lantern of red and yellow, its hollow spurs brimming with nectar. The timing is precise: the columbine blooms exactly as the first ruby-throated hummingbirds return from their wintering grounds.

The Science Behind This Variety

Wild Columbine is the most scientifically characterized of the four Nectary flowers. Researchers published a complete metabolomic profile of Aquilegia canadensis nectar in PLOS ONE — measuring the full chemical fingerprint including amino acids, organic acids, fatty acids, and sugar-alcohols. The red-and-yellow hummingbird form carries a higher amino acid fraction than its insect-pollinated relatives. Nectary Wild Columbine is our most complex formula.

When to Use It

Wild Columbine blooms April through June — the first major hummingbird nectar source of the year. Use from the moment you put your feeders out in spring through early summer.
